Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS IceCOLD® ?

IceCOLD® is two synthetic catalysts and a synthetic lubricity agent. One synthetic catalyst removes the oil fouling, increasing heat exchange 73% (NIST)  and the other causes the refrigerant to evaporate (cool) at a lower temperature.  The synthetic lubricant causes the lubricity of the compressor oil to increase by greater than 50% (SAE).  IceCOLD® contains no Chlorine or olefins or soap or mineral oils that cause damage to any system. See the SAE report.

HOW DOES IceCOLD® WORK ?

IceCOLD®, when installed in any kind of refrigeration system, will remove the "fouled" (ASHRAE term) and jelled compressor oil coating that has built up on the walls of the refrigeration tubing that blocks heat transfer. The surface tension (Vanderwalls forces) breaking-property of the IceCOLD® synthetic catalyst prevents any repeated buildup of oil fouling coatings in the system. The system's heat transfer return to the levels equal to new, never run equipment, allowing the compressor to cycle off up to 20% more often (20+% less electricity consumption and longer equipment life). Also, due to the high lubricity characteristic of IceCOLD®, there is less strain on the compressor allowing for easier start up due to increased lubricity, reduced surface tension and less back pressure.

WHY DO I CARE IF THE AIR FROM MY AC / REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT IS COLDER?

By removing the oil fouling and decreasing the evaporating temperature of the refrigeration; the air coming out of the AC / refrigeration supply duct will be colder; colder vent air will cool the space that is being cooled quicker, causing the set point on the thermostat to be reached sooner, and then the equipment will shut off, running up to 20+% less.  Air Conditioning and Refrigeration equipment that is not running uses no electricity.

WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF IceCOLD®?

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration equipment manufacturers, their distributors and repair service professionals depend on maintenance, repairs and replacement of equipment for their income. Enabling the equipment to last 10% to 50% longer with less parts replacements is not in their best interests. As you should know, A/C units are warranted for 5 years and designed to last 6 or 7 years.

IceCOLD® synthetic was not developed until 2003 and was not readily available until 2005 after undergoing extensive lab and field testing.  *Other formulas are "chlorinated" (Oxychem) or are made with soap (MACS) (not recommended by ASHRAE), and have the potential to form acids that will damage the compressor (see Oxychem letters).

WILL IceCOLD® VOID MY WARRANTY?

Click on the SAE J standard certification to see that IceCOLD® is totally compatible with refrigerants and compressor oils, and is the highest level of purity and is non-toxic and non-hazardous. Also, click on the MSDS to ascertain there is absolutely nothing in the IceCOLD® formula that could possibly harm equipment.

The Federal Trade Commission Magnusson Moss act states that a manufacturer cannot void or disavow a warranty due to an added on  second party product, unless they have proven that the second party product damages their equipment and notifies the second party manufacturer and their customers.  US Refrigeration Technologies, nor any of our customers, has ever received any such notice or letter from any manufacturer.  Manufacturers and HVAC contractors regularly "do not recommend" IceCOLD
® for the above reasons but are never able to give any reason, other than "if the manufacturer was concerned about ASHRAE oil fouling they would do something about it". (Carrier®).

WHAT WILL MY RETURN ON INVESTMENT BE WITH IceCOLD® ?

Add-on electrical  devices such as "surge protectors" and "motor controllers" yield efficiency improvements in the two-to-four percent range, with a Return On Investment (ROI) of four to ten years.  Purchasing new high efficiency AC equipment will have a payback of up to 5 years.  IceCOLD® has an ROI of less than ONE year, presenting a radical shift from "how we've always done it".

IceCOLD® technology is gaining acceptance due to the SAE certification and ASHRAE published information showing the potential for 20% to 30% in electricity savings by removing the oil fouling.

HOW LONG DOES IceCOLD® LAST ?

IceCOLD®lasts the lifetime of the equipment (coils).  Its OK to replace the compressor or other components; IceCOLD® only needs to be replaced if you replace a coil (a rare occurrence).

DOES IceCOLD® WORK BETTER ON OLD EQUIPMENT DUE TO HEAVIER OIL FOULING?

According to ASHRAE, oil fouling builds up continuously every year in refrigeration equipment.  So older equipment has more oil fouling and benefits from IceCOLD's® removal of the built-up oil fouling.

In numerous witnessed tests, IceCOLD® was installed in a new, right out-of-the-box Sanyo AC units; IceCOLD® increased the EER (efficiency) by ~27% time after time after just 20 minutes of running.  This indicates that serious oil fouling occurs much faster than the ASHRAE white paper reports.

Additionally, IceCOLD® lowers the evaporating temperature of the refrigerant in old and new systems, producing colder vent air.

And IceCOLD's® lubricity agent increases the lubricity of the compressor oil by >50% (SAE) in old and new systems, greatly extending equipment life.

WHAT IF  IceCOLD® DOES NOT INCREASE MY EQUIPMENT  EFFICIENCY?

US Refrigeration Technologies GUARANTEES the IceCOLD® will lower the operating cost of the treated equipment by 10% minimum or the customer will receive a full refund.  (See the IceCOLD® warranty).  No tricks, no fine print.  Since 2001, we have never been asked for a refund or had a complaint.
